The purpose of this assessment is to develop an evaluation plan for an orientation program incorporating simulation and designed for a newly recruited cohort of graduate nurses within the high-acuity women’s services. This plan aims to assess whether the intended improvement has been accomplished, assess the effectiveness of the intervention, and provide valuable information for the continued advancement of both nursing practice and patient care.

The primary outcomes of the simulation-based orientation intervention are enhanced clinical competence, critical thinking, and confidence of newly graduated nurses, as well as the ability to provide high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care in maternal and neonatal units of high clinical need. The existing simulation-based orientation intervention to high-acuity clinical units can be expanded to include new graduate nurse mentorship in the workplace. New technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality (VR), and emotionally adaptive technologies that provide real-time feedback and integrate multiple modalities can offer new integration of interprofessional education. This can lead to a positive impact on health care systems and patient outcomes (Mathur et al., 2022). The approaches can sustain patient safety and reduce the incidence of adverse events while increasing compliance with evidence-based practice and creating a culture where the best outcomes for patients and the workforce are continuously improved and sustained.

This capstone project has designed change-leading opportunities for nurses to develop skills in strategic planning, evidence-based practice, and interprofessional collaboration. Simulation-Based training (SBT) is an innovative medical training educational technique that provides healthcare professionals with realistic and immersive learning experiences (Elendu et al., 2024). In the training, participants will learn how to be change agents and will be able to guide their teams in the change process and introduce the new models and policies that will change the workflow. The project has the potential to develop a transformative and proactive mindset that will lead to the development of positive and sustainable changes in the healthcare system.

Quality Improvements in Current and Future Practice

With regard to contemporary nursing, this project illustrates evidence-based techniques that help nursing competence and improve patient outcomes. Several techniques used in the orientation simulation-based program include high-fidelity simulation, competency tracking, and inter-professional collaboration. These can be used to implement a simulation-based orientation to new staff, develop a standard of care and practice, and improve safety in the various care environments. These techniques help create a safe environment to practice and enhance both technical and non-technical skills, improve safety, and help lead to better outcomes for patients and the practice environment (Elendu et al., 2024). Additionally, these concepts and tools that were developed in the framework of this project can be used in other care environments, including acute care, community, and specialty care, where quality improvement can be attained through structured change, the introduction of new technology, and process review. The confidence to utilize these concepts promotes expansion of quality and safe care, employee satisfaction, and a culture of excellence within the organization.

Finally, the experiential learning and the orientation of this design can be transferred to other contexts to promote ongoing quality improvement and development.
